How does cultural capital influence the school choice of rural and urban migrant families in Nanjing, China? Evidence from a survey study

Across China, the household registration (hukou) policy has restricted school admission of rural–urban migrant children in urban areas. In 2017, Nanjing government issued Tenants Have Same Right as Householders (THSRH) to allow tenants areas access public-school resources. However, what have experienced and after negotiating these schools deserves serious attention from educators, scholars policymakers. This study surveyed 186 parents who chose send their junior secondary implementation THSRH policy. The identified that higher socioeconomic status migrants increased choices for schools. demonstrated restriction hukou is still a dominant factor influencing access. highlighted interaction development extracurricular abilities investment private supplementary tutoring are two main factors influence families.
